How to replace the ignition Key in a Saab9-3

If your car's key doesn't turn on you must replace it. This guide will show how to replace the ignition key on the Saab 9-3. You'll have to replace the key, purchase a new reprogrammable cell, and buy a brand new case for your key-fob.

Unlike older models, most modern Saab cars use transponders in the key-fob instead physical key that can be used to unlock and start the vehicle. The reprogrammable batteries in the key-fob eventually wear out, and they will not be able to hold charge. This is particularly true if you keep using the same key on the same lock.

A professional locksmith can change the battery fairly easily. If you have the right tools and patience, you can do it yourself. The first step is taking the key-fob from its case. This is done by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the slot in the middle of the case. The plastic is thin, and is easily damaged.

After the case is opened, you can make the new key by combining the lower portion of the old key along with a transponder and banana. This will ensure that the new key is linked to the CIM correctly, which could make all the difference when replacing the only key for your Saab 9-3.

If you don't have two keys you'll need to remove the dashboard and steering wheel for access to the ignition. Start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Once the battery is disconnected, you can take off all the trim pieces and dashboard pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dashboard is removed, you can place an screwdriver into the opening behind the ignition switch.

The ignition cylinder is equipped with a key lock that could prevent the vehicle from starting if you don't contain the key. If the ignition switch on your 900 isn't functioning properly, check to see if the key is in the lock or is stuck inside the barrel. You should also rotate your keys and keep them clean to prevent bent.

Saab cars differ from other cars in the sense that they don't utilize traditional keys made of metal. Instead, the car is able to recognize electronic signals coming from the key fob via a special microchip in it.

If you lose your sole working key fob the dealer will charge you the highest dollar for replacing the computer module (known as the CIM). But we can reprogram your existing computer's EEPROM to prepare it to accept new keys without replacing it. This can save you over 50% of what the dealer charges! This is the SAAB KEY PROGRAM. The metal portion of a classic Saab key is simple to copy, and is not much of an impediment against theft of a vehicle. The real security is the electronic component in the key-fob, which has a chip inside that can recognize your vehicle when it's put into the ignition switch.

Saab has relied on the technology of this anti-theft device for more than 10 years. It's not as secure as an actual lock on the door, but it does make the process of stealing your vehicle harder. This is the reason why every Saab owner should always keep a spare key on hand.

The majority of new Saabs come with two keys from the factory, however you can add more at an authorized dealer using a handheld computer, called a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception to this rule is the NG 9-3 vehicles which have more modern, more advanced features that require a key-fob.

The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module in those cars if all keys are lost. They'll charge you top dollar to do it. We can reprogram your computer's EEPROM to accept new keys without replacing expensive modules.

If your SAAB 9-3 key fob begins having trouble turning the barrel of the lock, it may be time to replace it. Fortunately, the process is relatively simple and doesn't require you to visit an agent. You can do it at home using a few basic tools.

It is first necessary to prepare the new keys. Before you start, disable the anti-theft by placing blocks underneath your rear wheels, and then releasing your handbrake. Then, insert the key into the ignition and switch it to the on position which activates the accessories, but it does not start the engine. Repeat this 5 times, and then keep the key on the "on" position.

Next, you'll need to get a replacement case for your key fob.  The Key Lab  are available at most auto parts stores and are generally very affordable. They can be purchased with or without electronics, depending on the model.

To open the case you need to gently push the screwdriver with a flathead into the slot in the middle. Once you split the case, you'll have access to all the internal electronics. Use a flathead screwdriver, which will gently pry open the electronics.
